Navigating the Risks and Rewards of Non-Custom Amplification Through Improved Patient Centered Counseling

Non-custom amplification devices, broadly defined, entail everything from personal sound amplification devices (PSAPs), assistive listening devices (ALDs), amplification via smartphone-based apps, and the yet-to-be-created category of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. This course explores the underlying rationale for embracing these devices, an evidence-based review of their efficacy, and current intervention strategies in clinics that are using non-customized amplification devices. The course will review the findings of the June 2016 NASEM report on affordability and accessibility of hearing health care for adults, recent changes in FDA regulations, shortcomings of the current audiology practice delivery model and opportunities for improving patient care with modern technology. This course aims to get audiologists thinking holistically about the added value of long-term patient care, rather than hearing aids. A fee-for-service model; an overview of how to guide patients to independently manage their hearing loss to improve daily activities; and help audiologists effectively use counseling at annual hearing aid check appointments. An alternative revenue stream will be discussed.

Evidence-Based Concussion Assessment and Management

Over three million people sustain concussions in the US each year. Older populations are prone to falls resulting in concussion and face additional challenges that can result in cognitive decline, reduced functional mobility, and negatively impacted activities of daily living. Directed by Hannah McLeod, Au.D., Clinician and educator at the American Institute of Balance, this session examines the latest evidence-based strategies for evaluation and management of concussions. Review symptoms of cortical and labyrinthine concussion and discuss evaluation protocols for differentiating between them. Explore common comorbidities that can impact treatment of older adults, and discover how vestibular rehabilitation therapy can improve treatment outcomes via demonstrations of gaze stabilization, habituation, and substitution.
